Privacy and disclosure

This site shares our family’s trip notes and includes affiliate booking links. Here is how optional analytics and those links work.

What we collect

This site has no visitor accounts, logins, comments, or contact forms.

The site includes Vercel Web Analytics code. Vercel describes its page-view measurement as cookie-free. Vercel Web Analytics is currently disabled for this project.

Vercel hosts this site. Its handling of website requests is described in Vercel’s privacy policy.

Optional Google Analytics and cookies

Google Analytics is available only if you choose Allow analytics. Before that choice, or if you reject analytics, this site does not load the Google tag or send events to Google Analytics.

When enabled and allowed, our analytics records page views and affiliate-link clicks using page, placement, and product labels. Our event code excludes query strings, fragments, full referrer URLs, link destinations, and information you enter. We do not send names, email addresses, booking details, or user IDs in these events. Automatic interaction measurement and advertising personalization are off in our Google Analytics property.

Google explains that Analytics uses first-party cookies to distinguish browser visits. Our configuration uses cookie names beginning with widx_gaand a 180-day lifetime without renewal. Google processes the resulting measurement data under its policy for information from sites using its services.

When analytics is available, use the Analytics settings button at the bottom of any page to allow, reject, or withdraw consent. Allow and reject have equal prominence. Withdrawal stops our tracking, removes this integration’s accessible cookies, and reloads the page to unload the tag. It does not delete measurement already sent to Google. Browsing and booking links work with either choice.

We store your analytics choice in this browser’s local storage for 180 days. The preference contains the choice, its date, and a version number. If browser storage is blocked, the choice lasts only for the current page. Clearing site storage removes the saved choice.

What we do not do

• We do not enable Google advertising features in this integration.
• We do not run ad networks or sell data to anyone, ever.
• We do not load Google Fonts from Google. The fonts on this site are served from our own domain.
• We do not have a newsletter yet. Where you see an email box, it is a placeholder that is not connected to anything and stores nothing. When that changes, this page changes first.

Affiliate links, in plain terms

Some links to hotels, park tickets, transfers, and gear are affiliate links. If you click one and book or buy, the merchant may pay us a small commission. It costs you nothing extra, and the price you see is the same price you would get going direct.

Our Xcaret hotel, park, and tour booking links run through Awin, Xcaret Global’s affiliate network. Awin records the referral and Xcaret may pay us a commission if you complete a qualifying booking. We use page and link-position labels to understand which links are useful. Those labels describe our pages, not you.

One link is different and we want it stated here rather than only in passing. Our getting there page carries a personal Chase credit-card referral link. If someone is approved through it, Mark receives Rapid Rewards points rather than money. That page says so on the page itself. We describe how we booked our own flights; we do not advise anyone to open a credit line, and no page on this site should be read as financial advice.

Those merchants typically set their own cookie when you arrive from our link, so they know the referral came from us. That is their cookie under their privacy policy, not ours. We never see your payment details, your booking, or your name.

What commissions do not buy: a better review. Every verdict on this site is what we actually think, and our safety page carries no affiliate links at all. More on how we work on the about page.

Things we load from other people

A few pages show live conditions (active Atlantic storms, a satellite sargassum signal, exchange rates). Our server fetches those from NOAA and the European Central Bank on a schedule and passes you the result, so your browser never contacts those sources and they never learn anything about you.

Where we link out to other sites, including official Xcaret pages and news sources, their privacy policies apply once you land there.

Children

This site is written for adults planning family travel. It is not directed at children. Our optional analytics does not ask for ages or other information about children.

Our own children appear in our trip photos and are referred to by age rather than by name. Those photos are published with our consent as their parents, and we will take any of them down if we change our minds.

Changes

When the site adds something that touches your data, such as a real newsletter, this page gets updated on the same day with the date at the top changed. We will not quietly expand what we collect.
