Xcaret Packing List: What We Actually Used in Five Days

We packed for five nights in July 2026 with a four-year-old and a 14-year-old, across three parks. This is the short version of what earned its space, what we should have left home, and the one rule we would tell anyone before they buy sunscreen.

The sunscreen rule nobody gets right
Start here, because it is the item most likely to be confiscated or wasted, and because the internet repeats a version of it that is not quite true.
The rule is different at each park.
- Xplor is strict, and specific: "Sunscreen and insect repellent used in the park must only have titanium dioxide and zinc oxide."
- Xenses is the opposite, in as many words: "Your sunscreens and tanning lotions can be of any type."
- Xcaret park publishes no sunscreen rule at all on the pages we read.
That Xplor wording matters more than "reef safe" or "biodegradable" on a bottle front, because those are marketing terms with no fixed definition. Turn the bottle over and read the active ingredients panel. If it lists avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate or homosalate, it is a chemical sunscreen and does not meet the Xplor wording, however green the label looks.
Buy one mineral sunscreen, use it everywhere, and the problem disappears.

adWhat actually earned its space
Water shoes. The single most used thing we packed, and at Xplor they are not a preference: its admission page states that closed shoes or water shoes are mandatory for all activities. Xcaret has no such rule, but you will be walking on wet limestone all day. Ours never dried out and we would still pack them first.
A towel from the hotel. If you are staying on the property, take one. Xcaret rents them at $3.99 or sells at $10, which is fine once and irritating across four people and three days.
An extra change of clothes per person, per park day. You finish these days wet. Xplor's own recommendations say the same thing, and so do Xenses'. We ignored the Xenses one and missed half the park, which is the single most avoidable mistake of our trip.
Cash or a card you are willing to use at the park. Photo packages, souvenirs and food packages are all sold on site. We spent about $350 on the photo package at Xplor, decided at a desk while wet, which is the worst moment to make a financial decision. Decide in advance.
Physical ID. The parks state an ID requirement, and Xplor specifically requires ID for children over 4.5 ft but under 12 to prove they qualify for the child ticket price. A photo on a phone is not the same thing.

What to leave at home
Life jackets and flotation. Xcaret issues life jackets for the underground rivers and requires them. This is pure wasted luggage.
Snorkel gear, probably. If you hold an Xcaret Plus ticket, snorkel rental is free with a $10 deposit. On Basic it is $10.99 to rent or $25 to buy. Bringing your own only pays off across several days, and it is bulky.
A stroller, if you can manage without. Xcaret rents singles at $24.95 and doubles at $34.95. We managed without one, though we also went back to the hotel mid-afternoon most days rather than pushing through. The paths run through caves and over stone, so a stroller is not always an advantage.
Anything valuable. Lockers are $5.99 at Xcaret and included at Xplor, but the simplest answer is to bring less.

The pattern is clear enough: nothing here is worth a checked bag. Pack the things with no rental option, which is essentially shoes, sunscreen and ID.
Packing for a small child specifically
Three things we learned the hard way, covered in more depth on Xcaret with kids.
Something warm for after the river. The underground rivers are shaded groundwater and colder than the sea. Ours was properly cold by the midpoint and we took an early exit.
Measure and weigh your child before you go, and write both numbers down. Xplor's gates are height and weight based, and the weight floor on the ziplines is 88 lb, which surprises people. The full chart for every park is on our height requirements page.
Snacks for the bus. The airport transfer runs about an hour and boarding is first come, first served. On our return only four scattered seats were left and our four-year-old rode the whole way on a lap.

- Water shoes, one pair per person

- A payment method, and a decision made in advance about the photo package
